What dry ice cleaning is in car detailing

Dry ice cleaning uses solid carbon dioxide pellets projected by compressed air. The process combines three actions: cooling of the deposit; kinetic impact; rapid sublimation of CO₂. The cold helps make the contaminant more brittle. The impact of the pellets promotes detachment and the transformation of CO₂ from solid to gas helps separate it from the surface. The process does not use water, sand, grit, detergents, solvents or mineral abrasives.

The definition “residue-free” must be used correctly. Dry ice does not leave water, sludge, spent abrasive or detergent. What remains instead is:

These materials must be collected through extraction, tarpaulins or controlled cleaning.

Why use dry ice in car detailing

The technology is interesting when the aim is to prevent water and detergents from penetrating connectors, wiring, cavities, joints, mechanical components, areas that are difficult to dry, the underbody and internal parts of the engine bay. The main operational advantages are: dry process; absence of residual abrasive; less need for drying; reduced use of detergents; good access to complex geometries; possibility of localised work; reduction of some disassembly operations; cleaning of assembled components, when conditions allow it.

Dry ice cleaning is not, however, automatically safe on every surface. Before treatment, it is necessary to assess: material; temperature; state of conservation; adhesion of finishes; presence of cracks; exposed wiring; aged seals; brittle plastics; bonded surfaces; protective products that must be preserved.

Cryogenic restoration and decontamination are applied selectively to different areas of the vehicle:

Engine bay

The engine bay can accumulate dust, grease, oil, road residues, carbonaceous dirt, leaves, deposits, maintenance residues and contamination around pipes and components. Dry ice cleaning makes it possible to work without directly introducing water into the area. It can be used on the engine block, supports, casings, tanks, pipes, brackets, metal surfaces, technical plastics, areas around wiring and hard-to-reach parts.

Before the operation, the vehicle must be made safe. The following must be assessed: engine temperature; battery; electrical circuits; air intakes; open connectors; damaged components; deteriorated seals; any leaks. The absence of water reduces the humidity problem, but does not authorise work without analysing the component.

Underbody, suspension and wheel arches

The underbody may present road dirt, dried mud, oils, grease, bituminous residues, contamination, old waxes, protective products and deposits around pipes and supports. Cleaning may be aimed at aesthetic enhancement, documentation of vehicle condition, restoration, surface inspection, preparation before maintenance, removal of accumulated dirt and cleaning of collector cars.

Before starting work, dirt must be distinguished from materials that must remain. A jet that is too intense can remove or weaken protective waxes, underbody coatings, sealants, anti-corrosion protective products, markings, labels and original finishes. On wheel arches, it makes it possible to reach internal linings, edges, suspension, supports, differential housings, transmissions, casings and areas around brake calipers, adapting the configuration to the differences between plastic, rubber, paint and metal.

Classic cars, collector cars, motorcycles and scooters

Dry ice cleaning is particularly interesting when the aim is to preserve original finishes, markings, zinc plating, small hardware, components, controlled patina, underbody appearance and engine-bay details. The objective must not automatically be to return every surface to a new appearance. In conservation restoration, it is necessary to distinguish between dirt, protective grease, original wax, paint, patina, oxidation and historic material. A preliminary sample is essential. The technology applies with similar advantages to the engine, frame, swingarm and transmission of motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and e-bikes, for which SUBLIMA MINI is specifically indicated by FEVI.

Applications to be assessed with particular caution

Dirt detachment by thermal shock requires strict preventive checks on fragile or degraded substrates:

  • Painted bodywork, films, PPF and wrapping: The jet exerts impact, cooling and localised stress. The condition of the clear coat, paint adhesion, cracks or previous repainting must be assessed. On films and wrapping, the jet can lift edges, dull the surface or weaken adhesion, always requiring authorisation from the manufacturer.
  • Old seals and electrical components: Hardened, cracked, heat-aged or very thin rubber and elastomeric materials can be damaged by the jet. On electrical and electronic components, the absence of water is an advantage, but connectors, insulation, condensation and electrostatic charges must be assessed, making the circuit safe.
  • Vehicle interiors: Dry ice can be assessed on some rigid surfaces, seat rails, pedals and technical components. It must never be applied without tests on leather, fabrics, Alcantara, soft-touch coverings, displays, painted plastics, wood, headliners, foams, bonded materials and decorated surfaces.

Removal capacity of dry ice technology

Dry ice cools and detaches oils, grease, road dirt, hard carbonaceous residues and some glues. Very thick organic residues may require several passes, intermediate collection or preliminary removal of the excess part.

What must not be promised: Dry ice cleaning must not be described as capable of eliminating any contaminant, always removing rust, stripping every surface or always avoiding disassembly. Dry ice does not normally create the abrasive profile typical of traditional blasting. It is therefore not the first technology to choose when deep corrosion must be eliminated, mill scale removed, a surface etched, roughness created or very resistant coatings stripped.

Mandatory preliminary test: The sample must be carried out on a low-visibility but representative area. The following must be checked: removal capacity; surface behaviour; changes in finish; response of plastics and rubber; adhesion of paints and protective products; time required and ice consumption. Parameters to record include: model; pellet type; pressure; airflow; dry ice dosage; nozzle; distance; angle; speed and number of passes.

How to choose between SUBLIMA MINI, MAX and TOP models

Sizing the cryogenic unit follows the estimate of work volumes and the configuration of compressed air:

The compressor is fundamental: in addition to maximum pressure, effective continuous airflow, pipe diameter and total absence of condensate or oil in the line matter, as these would cause internal ice formation or dosing instability. Pellet freshness, density and correct storage, in insulated and non-airtight containers, determine output; old or partially sublimated pellets drastically reduce the effectiveness of the process. In addition to dry ice, the service cost must include compressed air, labour, extraction and plant depreciation.

Operational safety and carbon dioxide monitoring

CO₂ is a colourless and odourless gas, heavier than air, which can accumulate in low areas and displace oxygen, especially in closed workshops, basements or inspection pits. NIOSH indicates for CO₂ an 8-hour time-weighted average limit of 5,000 ppm and an IDLH value of 40,000 ppm: forced ventilation and low-level extraction must be rigorously sized.

Direct contact with pellets at −79 °C can cause cold burns, requiring the use of insulating gloves and goggles. The high-pressure jet also generates high noise and projection of dirt fragments, requiring hearing protection and visors. Finally, to eliminate the risk of electrostatic build-up, suitable ESD procedures and stable earthing must be adopted.
